David currently works as a consultant to CEA as he launches Full Circle, a new enterprise that is commercializing bio char for large-scale carbon sequestration.
David previously served as CEA’s Chief Scientist, specializing in next-generation transportation, energy, and information technologies.
He works with a wide array of private- and public-sector clients to manage environmental risk, quantify the life-cycle impacts of human activities, develop
revenue-generation models for short- and long-term environmental strategies, and engage stakeholder groups in constructive dialogue.
David combines an expertise in policy instruments that catalyze market development for emerging technologies, exposure assessment of indoor/outdoor air pollutants,
and climate change. Calling upon his scientific training and creative vision, David takes a unique, multi-disciplinary approach to assisting his clients.
David’s past work has focused attention on several environmental problems. He developed a surrogate metric for estimating human exposure to fine particulates that
both assisted in assessing acute health effects and supported the promulgation of the PM 2.5 standard. He also collaborated with a team of scientists that quantified
the economic costs of air pollution in large metropolitan areas and investigated the psychological effects of air pollution in Los Angeles Basin to refine public
perceptions of acute and chronic air pollution events.
Prior to joining CEA, David was Principal Environmental Scientist for AeroVironment, Inc. He currently serves on the technical advisory boards of the Lindbergh
Foundation and the Bay School of San Francisco.
David holds a doctorate in Environmental Epidemiology from UC Irvine, a master’s degree in environmental microbiology from UC Irvine, and a bachelor’s degree in
biology from the University of Oregon.
David is active across a number of disciplines and in a variety of communities. In a feature story on David, the San Francisco Chronicle described him as an
"epidemiologist, eco-filmmaker, hybrid car consultant, green public art advocate and grown-up hippie kid". Recently, David has been active in greening Burning Man and
creating a public art installation, "Language of Birds," that will be displayed in San Francisco’s North Beach in fall 2008.
