SERVICE OFFERINGS

Developing Sustainable Business Strategies:
When a client is faced with a new business opportunity or environmental challenge, CEA critically assesses the situation and develops a short and long-term plan for achieving the client's goals. CEA identifies the principal drivers of the problem, describes a transformational business model that meets operating and environmental objectives, and develops an implementation plan.  We specialize in integrated strategies that address climate, air, water, waste and conservation-related objectives to achieve maximum environmental and business benefits.

Climate Strategy and Program Design: As the regulatory landscape changes, a credible climate initiative can position a company to respond with agility and speed.  In addition, a proactive stance can generate significant public perception benefits, especially for first movers in an industry.  To achieve these benefits, however, improvements must be real, validated, and clearly communicated to withstand increasing public scrutiny. CEA helps clients navigate this new landscape with greenhouse gas (GHG) inventory analyses, evaluation of cost-effective GHG reduction opportunities, design of high-credibility GHG offset portfolios, and communication of benefits to stakeholders. Documenting Results for the Public: Once a sustainable business or climate strategy is in place, progress on implementation must be tracked and reported to interested stakeholders.   This requires identifying appropriate performance metrics, measuring progress against those metrics, and documenting program results.  CEA helps clients define performance metrics and appropriate public reporting indicators.

Greening the Supply Chain:
In today’s increasingly outsourced markets, supply chain environmental and social performance presents both opportunities and risks.  CEA evaluates and helps re-design supply chain relationships to align incentives and improve performance and compliance along the supply chain.  In addition, by understanding the function of the product, CEA helps clients develop strategies to increase service offerings to generate alternative streams of revenue.  CEA has worked extensively in the areas of chemical supply chain and waste management services. Non-profit Strategy and Business Planning: CEA develops strategies and business plans for non-profit organizations and funding foundations. CEA combines programmatic expertise with experience in finance to design program strategies, organizational structures and financial plans that increase the efficiency and effectiveness of non-profits engaged in conservation. Conservation Finance and Facilitating Investments: CEA works with a broad range of private, foundation, and public investors to structure conservation vehicles that include venture capital, program related investments (PRIs), and endowment funds.  CEA is then unique in its capacity to syndicate biodiversity conservation investments across an unprecedented range of capital providers. Working in partnership with foundations, multi-laterals, and market-rate investors, CEA can access a wide spectrum of capital, including grant funding, concessional finance and market-rate investments.

CASE STUDIES

Live Nation

To reduce its environmental impacts, Live Nation engaged CEA to review its Northern California operations and assess baseline environmental performance.  CEA then identified specific options for reducing high-priority environmental impacts and operating costs.  Based on these recommendations, Live Nation is taking steps to reduce and offset greenhouse gas emissions, conserve energy, reduce water use, increase recycling and purchase more environmentally friendly products. Cooling Man

Cooling Man’s mission is to unite the scientific and artistic communities in addressing climate change by inspiring direct climate action by individuals. Coordinated by CEA employees, Cooling Man develops greenhouse gas (GHG) inventories for cultural events and art works, suggests ways to reduce emissions, and finally helps obtain GHG offsets to more than compensate for remaining impacts.

World Wildlife Fund International

CEA worked with a team of program directors, communications directors and fundraisers from WWF's International Secretariat to create three initiatives demonstrating new models for conservation action in key regions.

CEA developed business plans for WWF’s three Keystone Initiatives (KIs): the Amazon, the Congo and Bycatch. CEA evaluated WWF's current work in the three focus areas and assessed its programmatic and financial capacity throughout the WWF worldwide network. The final business plans outlined WWF's initiative strategy, programmatic design, organizational structure, and financial budget and included a fundraising and a communications plan. The KI is designed to leverage WWF's current network capacity, as well as opportunities for collaboration with other organizations. Each KI were built upon the already established targets and milestones of WWF's Global Programs, utilizing the full range of WWF’s capabilities, and serve as models for future conservation efforts.

Chemical Strategies Partnership

CEA serves as the management team for the Chemical Strategies Partnership (CSP) and its membership arm, the CMS Forum. CSP was founded in 1996 and seeks to reduce chemical use, waste, risks, and cost through the transformation of the chemical supply chain by redefining the way chemicals are used and sold. CSP promotes as service-based model, called “chemical management services” where manufacturers shift away from a traditional supplier relationship to a strategic alliance with a chemical service provider. Instead of purchasing chemicals, the manufacturer purchases chemical services: assistance in purchasing, managing, and tracking chemicals. This shift to chemical services directly aligns the incentives of the service provider and manufacturer to reduce chemical use and costs. CSP has collaborated with more than 10 companies to assist them in analyzing current chemical management costs and designing a chemical management services (CMS) program. CSP also serves as an information clearinghouse, disseminating the model and introducing CMS to new industry sectors.

CMS Forum

CEA serves as the coordinator of the Chemical Management Services Forum (CMS Forum) a coalition of CMS providers, their customers, tier II chemical suppliers, and other stakeholders interested in promoting CMS. The mission of the CMS Forum is to grow the awareness and practice of economically and environmentally beneficial chemical management services. CEA conducts workshops, educational outreach, industry research, and promotional activities for the CMS Forum.

Infrastructure Manufacturer

CEA assisted in the development of distributed generation business plans for a major manufacturing company. Analysis included an evaluation of the environmental attributes of distributed generation technology, opportunities to develop next generation regulations, and the integration of auto and energy sector infrastructure.

Trust for Conservation Innovation

Detailed case study

In 2001, several non-profit funders approached CEA to help develop an efficient and client-driven non-profit organization that could serve as a fiscal sponsor for its projects. After conducting research on fiscal sponsors in the US, CEA helped establish a new non-profit organization to support environmental leaders in their conservation work: The Trust for Conservation Innovation.

World Wildlife Fund International

Detailed case study

CEA developed a business plan for WWF’s initiative to implement the European Union's reformed fisheries legislation, the Common Fisheries Policy. This work involved the evaluation of WWF's current policy, advocacy, and research capacity throughout its network of national organizations in Europe. In addition, CEA evaluated the capacity of potential partners including other non-governmental organizations and research institutions. The final business plan outlined WWF's initiative strategy, organizational structure, and financial budget. The plan was designed to leverage WWF's current network capacity, as well as opportunities for collaboration with other organizations.
